Entrepreneurship Hand-holding for those with bright ideas Our Bureau
New Delhi April 24 Mr W. Amarnath of Chennai dreams of generating electricity from sea waves, while another Chennaite Prof M. Robert Masillamani wants to run Wi-max enabled buses for farmers. Their ideas, together with others, may take tangible shape with the launch of the `India Innovation Growth Programme' aimed at commercialisation of viable ideas. Mr Amarnath and Prof Masillamani are participating in a workshop in the Capital to understand the commercialisation process. The two-year nationwide programme has been launched by FICCI in association with Lockheed Martin Corporation and IC2 Institute of the University of Texas. The aeronautics major would fund the ideas. The programme entails a competitive selection process and the selected participants would receive business development training and funding opportunities. It received 100 applications in an online process and 12 would be selected for final incubation. "We are primarily looking at early stage technologies to be taken further. Some of the ideas received are India centric," said Mr Len Denton, a Technology Strategist at the IC2 Institute. Without giving the exact figure, he said, "the funding would run into several million dollars". The programme is open to companies, professors and other individuals. Another set of 12 ideas would be incubated in the second year of the programme.
