Loom imports: Plea to extend subsidy scheme

Our Bureau

Coimbatore April 24 The powerloom industry has suggested to the Union Textile Ministry the continuation of capital subsidy for used shuttleless loom imports under the proposed modified technology upgradation fund scheme (TUFS) expected to be notified by the Centre soon.

The Powerloom Development and Export Promotion Council (PDEXCIL) Chairman, Mr M.S. Mathivanan, in a representation to the Ministry stated that there was a strong case for allowing used shuttleless weaving machines to be imported in the absence of equivalent technology machines being manufactured indigenously.

There is no adequate capacity available within India to produce such hi-tech looms.

The Government had simultaneously sanctioned several hi-tech weaving park schemes as well as integrated textile park projects.

A large number of investors keen on participating in these park projects using the TUFS funding route have plans to import used and second-hand looms for their projects in these parks.
