Virginia eyeing tie-ups in renewable energy sector

Our Bureau

New Delhi Apr 24 The Commonwealth of Virginia is looking for partnership with scientists in India to create a collaborative model of research technologies, with a focus on renewable energy.

While speaking at a session organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry, Mr Aneesh P. Chopra, Secretary of Technology, Commonwealth of Virginia, said 10 per cent of patents filled in Virginia are from the US citizens of Indian origin, which shows the importance of the Indian community in the progress of technology in the US.

Inviting the Indian business community and researchers to take interest in Virginia, Mr Chopra said that one out of every three jobs created in Virginia are in the field of technology. Higher educational institutes also play an important role in the growth of Virginia, he added.

Focus on agriculture

Mr Patrick O. Gottschalk, Secretary of Commerce and Trade, Commonwealth of Virginia, said that agriculture is a key area of focus and Virginia can work with India on cold storage technology based on the experience of Virginia's agricultural growth.

Energy sector

Virginia is keen to partner India in infrastructure requirements and looked forward to the energy sector as both countries are focusing on development of renewable and alternate energy.

India and the US can develop and protect intellectual property together which can help the world, said Mr Gottschalk.

Meanwhile, FICCI and the Virginia Economic Development Partnership had signed a memorandum of understanding to promote trade and economic cooperation.
