Processing unit in Rajahmundry may be expanded

Visakhapatnam April 25 The Girijan Co-operative Corporation (GCC) plans two cold storage units - one at Anandapuram in Visakhapatnam district and the other in Khammam district - according to Mr Rajeswara Rao, General Manager-Administration.

He was speaking at a sensitisation programme organised by the Department of Agriculture and Co-operation in the GCC on Wednesday to create awareness about the schemes for improvement of agricultural marketing and infrastructure.

Refinance Facility

Mr Rajeswara Rao said the proposed cold storage unit at Anandapuram would have 10,000 tonnes of capacity, costing Rs 4.5 crore. The details on the Khammam cold storage were being worked out, he added. He said the main product being sold by the GCC was honey and it had two processing units — one at Rajahmundry and the other at Chittoor. "The Rajahmundry unit has the capacity of 100 kg per day. We are trying to increase to 300 kg per day," he said.

Salient Features

Mr G. Mohan Naidu, of the Department of Agriculture and the Marketing Infrastructure, explained the salient features of the various schemes meant to improve rural and agricultural marketing. "The investment subsidy will amount to 25 per cent of the project cost, subject to a ceiling of Rs 50 lakh, in the general category and 33.33 per cent of the capital cost, subject to a ceiling of Rs 60 lakh, for SC/ST category," he explained.

Mr K. Sethu Prasad, Deputy General Manger of the Andhra Bank, Visakhapatnam, suggested that self-help groups of women be involved in the implementation of the schemes. Mr S. Adinarayana, General Manager, GCC, and Mr C. Uday Bhaskar, Assistant General Manager, Nabard, also spoke.
