AP Builders to halt Govt works from today

Our Bureau

Hyderabad April 25 In protest against the delay in implementing Government orders providing for additional funds to contractors on account of increased cost of construction, the Builders Association of India, AP centre has decided to halt all Government construction works from Thursday.

"The paucity of cement and escalation in prices of steel and sand have pushed up construction cost by over 25 per cent. Despite the approval of Chief Minister Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, officials are not willing to release funds to make up the difference between the Government prices and market prices," Mr S.N. Reddy, Chairman, told Business Line.

SCHEMES IN LIMBO

The decision to halt construction works would hit major schemes such as the Rajiv Gruha Kalpa Yojana and the Indiramma housing project.

"With the intervention of the Chief Minister, Government Orders (GO nos 233 and 175) had been issued recently, but the officials are not implementing them, citing various reasons," Mr Reddy said.

Currently, the State Government has given 20 major contracts for constructing over 50,000 housing units.
