Bengal Initiative asks Vietnam for trade consulate

Our Bureau

Kolkata April 25 Bengal Initiative has asked the Vietnam Government to set up a trade consulate here and start direct flights between Vietnamese cities and Kolkata. This was stated today by the Mayor of Kolkata, Mr Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya, who led a 26-member delegation of Bengal Initiative to Vietnam on a goodwill mission.

"The need for a trade consulate in Kolkata and direct Kolkata-Hanoi flight was felt and emphasised. The Vietnam authorities will get back to us on this," he said. "There is a huge tourism potential in Vietnam. The country gets nearly 20 million tourists annually. We felt direct flights to and from Kolkata will help to improve tourism potential in both the countries," he added.

According to Ms Aloka Gooptu, Working Chairperson of Bengal Initiative, about a third of Indian tourists going to Vietnam are Bengalis, which further underscored the need for direct flights to and from Kolkata.

According to Mr S.B. Ganguly, Chairman of Bengal Initiative, "There are immense business opportunities between the two countries in the areas of pharmaceuticals, timber, tea, auto components, food processing, information technology and fisheries. Vietnam can also emerge as a major export market for Indian two-wheelers," he added.
