Kolkata April 25 Tata Motors Ltd on Wednesday signed an agreement with the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation Ltd (WBIDC) and the Technical Education Department of the State Government to provide technical training to people affected by the acquisition of land at Singur for the Tatas' small car project. They would be provided technical training at four select technical training institutes to facilitate their employability in industry. These four training institutes include ITI Howrah, ATI Dasnagar, ITI Hooghly and Ramkrishna Mission Belur Math.

Signatories to the agreement included Mr Debashish Som, Managing Director of WBIDC; Mr M.B. Paralkar, General Manager, Corporate HR and Head CSR, Tata Motors; and Mr S.C. Tewari, Secretary, Technical Education and Training, Government of West Bengal.

Briefing newspersons after the agreement was signed, Mr Nirupam Sen, State Minister for Industries, said the primary aim of the "very important and significant agreement" was to ensure the employability of those affected by the Tata Motors project. Candidates who complete the courses would be eligible for employment at Tata Motors and its ancillary units.

Sources speaking on behalf of Tata Motors have pegged the number of project-affected people in this regard at 358. This includes 17 ITI-trained local youths who had earlier passed a test conducted by Tata Motors and were selected for training at Jamshedpur.

The sources said all the 358 candidates would have to undertake customised technical training courses of between six and nine months duration at one of the four identified technical training institutes. They would also have to undergo training on the shop floor.
