Mergers & Acquisitions AI, Indian becoming one airline by June Our Bureau
"The merger would allow them to travel from any part of the country to most parts of the globe."
AVIATION MEET: The CMD of Air India, Mr V. Thulasidas, addressing the US-India Aviation partnership summit in New Delhi on Wednesday. V.V. Krishnan .
New Delhi April 25 Air India and Indian, the merger of which has already begun, would become one airline by June this year, the Chairman and Managing Director of Air India, Mr V. Thulasidas, said on Wednesday. "The process of integrating the workforce, fleet and network has started. The merged entities headquarters, new logo and emblem would be revealed in the next few weeks," Mr Thulasidas said while addressing the India-US Aviation Summit.
Global Ranking
Explaining the rationale behind the merger, the CMD said that it would be incorrect to compare it with either the merger of Air France and KLM or Lufthansa and Swiss Air. "At best the merger can be compared to what happened in France in 1990 or in Britain a long time ago when British Airways was created. The owners of Air India and Indian felt that instead of growing like Pan American or TWA Airlines that primarily had international operations, it made sense not to duplicate the resources and have one strong carrier that could do domestic and international operations," Mr Thulasidas said. Elaborating on the advantages of the merged entity for passengers, the Air India CMD said that the merger would allow them to travel from any part of the country to most parts of the globe. The merged entity would also move ahead in the global ranking of airlines. "Currently, Air India is ranked 48th while Indian is ranked at 67. The merged entity will be ranked 21," Mr Thulasidas said.
