Archana Venkat

Chennai April 26 The first phase of the information technology park jointly developed by W.S. Industries (India) Ltd and Kolkata-based developers The Chatterjee Group is likely to be completed in December.

"We are in discussions with companies to occupy this section of the IT park," said Mr Narayan Sethuramon, Managing Director, W.S. Industries. The Rs 250-crore park is being developed in Porur, Chennai, on lands owned by W.S Industries. The first phase would be spread across 2.5 lakh sq ft, while the entire park, about 10 lakh sq ft large, will be built in three more phases over the next few years.

Insulator facility

W.S. Industries manufactures high voltage electro-porcelain transmission and sub-station insulators for electronic transmission and distribution industries. The company has also commenced work on its second manufacturing unit, a joint venture with US based PPC Insulators, to be set up in Andhra Pradesh.

"All the major machinery has been ordered and the building construction has started," Mr Sethuramon told Business Line on the sidelines of a seminar organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry. PPC is a strategic technology partner and is providing inputs on selecting equipment and vendors for the new unit.

"Once the construction is completed, they (PPC Insulators) will focus on adopting in-house process technologies," he said. The 8,000-tonne-a-year unit will be operational in April 2008 and make high voltage insulators.

The company recently completed the capacity expansion of its existing unit to 16,000 tonnes a year, adding 2,000 tonnes. "We will continue to focus and invest on this unit in aspects such as modernisation and improving energy efficiency," he said.
