THE GOVERNOR, Mr Rameshswar Thakur, greets the new Ministers after 17 were sworn in, eight of them from Telangana, at the Raj Bhavan in Hyderabad on Thursday. - Mohammed Yousuf
Hyderabad April 26 The three-year-old Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy Government expanded the Cabinet on Thursday, inducting 17 members and thereby taking the total tally to 41. The Governor, Mr Rameshwar Thakur, administered the oath of office and secrecy to the new members at Raj Bhavan.
Woman minister
A computer science graduate, Ms Galla Aruna from the Rayalaseema region and family member of the promoters of the Amara Raja group, was the lone woman inducted. This expansion was undertaken for the first time since the Congress came to power in May 2004. Much speculated appointment of Deputy Chief Minister did not take place. Several Cabinet berths were vacant following the withdrawal of support by the Telangana Rashtriya Samithi, who have been voicing their interest to carve out a separate State of Telangana. Following this, most of those portfolios that were being handled by Dr Reddy's team members, have now been allocated to new ministers. Of the 17 members inducted, eight were drawn from the Telangana region, seven from the costal region and the rest two from Rayalaseema.
