National meet on software engg under way

Kochi April 26 Dr P.K. Abdul Azis, Vice-Chancellor of Cochin University of Science and Technology, inaugurated the National Conference on Software Engineering NCSOFT - 07, organised by the Computer Science Department in association with Computer Society of India, Software Division and Cochin Chapter.

In his inaugural address, Dr Azis mentioned the upcoming Smart City project and said the university wanted to play a major role in grooming IT professionals and in taking up projects for the IT industry.

He also talked of his vision of starting an IT park and evolving a business model in the campus by utilising the human resources of the computer science and allied departments.

Mr Satheesh Babu, Secretary, National Execom, CSI, said the academic programmes in software engineering were insufficient to cater to the current demands of the IT industry.

The conference proceedings comprising 50 research papers were released by Mr H.R. Mohan, Chairman of the Software Division of CSI and Associate Vice-President of The Hindu by handing over a copy to the Vice-Chancellor.

MANPOWER DEVELOPMENT

Mr Mohan said that to maintain India's lead in IT and software, applying engineering principles in various stages of software development process was crucial and manpower development should be geared up.

Dr A.Ramachandran, Registrar, CUSAT, offered felicitations. Prof K. Poulose Jacob, Director, School of Computer Science, welcomed the gathering. Mr G. Vishwanathan, Chairman of CSI, Cochin, proposed a vote of thanks.

The event is scheduled for two days with paper presentations in various aspects of software engineering and talks by practising professionals.
