Our Bureau

Kolkata April 26 A "mild scuffle" broke out at the Hindustan Motors (HM) Uttarpara factory when a section of the striking workforce tried to prevent movement of vehicles carrying finished goods of Tata Motors, according to Ms Soni Shrivastav, General Manager, Corporate Communications, CK Birla Group.

"There was a mild scuffle when a section of the striking workers protested against movement of materials from the factory. However, with the help of local police force, we managed to despatch the materials," she added.

"The situation was brought under control as there were very few of them."

Earlier, Tata Motors had moved the Calcutta High Court seeking intervention to regain possession of goods from the Uttarpara factory.

Mr Amitava Bhattacharyya, President of the Sangrami Shramik Karmachari Union (SSKU), one of the five registered trade unions of HM, said: "The management was trying to remove finished goods belonging to HM with those of Tata Motors. That is why the workers protested."

The meeting between the HM management, representatives of trade unions and the State Government held on Wednesday yielded no results.
