Mangalore April 26 The Mangalore Customs Commissionerate collected Rs 600.35 crore in revenue last fiscal.

Speaking to newspersons on Thursday, Dr John Joseph, Commissioner of Central Excise and Customs, Mangalore said that the target for 2006-07 was fixed at Rs 590 crore but the commissionerate was able to realise Rs 600.35 crore.

During the year, MRPL paid duty of Rs 192.52 crore while Ruchi Soya Industries Ltd paid duty of Rs 207.23 crore.

Though the target of 2007-08 is yet to be fixed, the estimated revenue for the fiscal is likely to be Rs 660.55 crore, he said.

He added that the Centre's move to impose duty of Rs 300 a tonne on export of iron fines and concentrates of all sorts will help fetch revenue of Rs 108 crore during the current fiscal.

The total revenue collected at the Mangalore airport from baggage duty from October 2006 (the airport began international flight operations in October) amounts to Rs 4.85 lakh.

Of the amount collected since October, Rs 3.73 lakh is from commercial quantity of cigarettes — this means 77 per cent of the duty collected comes under non-baggage and non-bona fide items.
