Victoria invites investments in lifesciences

Our Bureau

Bangalore April 26 After education, IT, tourism and aerospace, the Australian state of Victoria is now interested in Bangalore's budding lifesciences industry.

The annual BangaloreBIO.Com event will form the stage for the two countries to discuss ties.

The Victorian Government hopes to attract firms doing research and development activity in medical science, life sciences, biotechnology, nanotechnology, and Information and Communication Techology (ICT) to set up centres in Australia.

"Victoria is strong in lifesciences, while India has a developed pharmaceutical industry. These industries are growing rapidly and we want to invite investment in research and development centres in Melbourne," said Mr Tim Holding, Minister for ICT, State Government of Victoria, Australia, speaking in the city on Wednesday.

Admitting that Australia was facing a skills shortage, Mr Holding said Melbourne had an unemployment ratio of less than 5 per cent. Indian IT companies are flocking to Melbourne to take advantage of the infrastructure, resources and it's "good life," as Mr Holding put it.
