Cardamom prices dip on weak demand

G.K. Nair

Kochi April 27 Cardamom prices dipped on weak demand and improved arrivals at the auctions held during the week in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Domestic buyers have slowed down. Exporters are not buying mainly because of high prices and decline in quality of the capsules, market sources said. The season has reached its fag end and since the gap between now and the beginning of the next season is little over two months, the dealers appear to have slowed down buying, they said.

Higher arrivals

Besides, the arrivals have increased compared to the previous week as growers and traders released the stocks they were holding due to high prices, they said.

Arrivals at the Cardamom Processing and Marketing Company (CPMC) on Wednesday at Kumily were 55 tonnes against 46 tonnes last week.

The average price, which was at Rs 394.54 a kg on Tuesday dropped to Rs 366.19 on Wednesday. The maximum price at Kumily auction was Rs 482 a kg fetched by 8-mm bold capsules having good colour. The prices of 7.5-mm and 7-mm were Rs 380-Rs 400 and Rs 370-Rs 400 a kg respectively, Mr P.C. Punnoose, General Manager, CPMC, said.

Prices of the graded varieties were: AGEB Rs 460-Rs 470; AGB Rs 395-Rs 405; AGS Rs 380-Rs 390; and AGS1 Rs 345-Rs 355 a kg. The open market prices at Bodinayakannur were: AGEB Rs 440-Rs 460;AGB Rs 380-Rs 390; AGS Rs 360-Rs 375; and AGS1 Rs 330-Rs 340. Bulk was fetching Rs 350-Rs 475 a kg.

The total arrivals during the current season up to April 25 were at 7,400 tonnes against 8,440 tonnes in the corresponding period the previous season. The sales stood at 6,806 tonnes (7,874 tonnes) and the weighted average price was at 309.38 a kg (Rs 216.14).

Though the growing regions have received rains in the recent days, the temperature was unusually high and that is not suitable for the cardamom plants, growers pointed out.
