Seminar on SEZ planning

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam April 27 The Andhra Pradesh regional chapter of the Institute of Town Planners of India (ITPI) is holding a one-day seminar here on Saturday on planning issues related to SEZs, especially with reference to cities having more than a million people.

At a press meet here on Friday, Mr B. Purushottama Reddy, chairman of the AP chapter, and Mr Maheep Singh Thapar, secretary, said the enormous success of SEZs in China had spurred the Union Government to take up SEZs, but the policy decision had thrown up several contentious issues, such as the use of agricultural land for setting up SEZs and the charge that the Government was acquiring land from farmers at a cheaper rate and handing it over to the industry.

They said, "There are several such issues with regard to SEZs. We will discuss them and make our recommendations to the Union and the State Governments."
