Govt clears way for admissions in IIMs

Our Bureau

New Delhi April 27 In a partial solution to the ongoing issue over reservations for OBCs in Centrally-funded colleges, the Government on Friday officially allowed admissions to those seats that existed last year.

However, for seats that were created for the 2007-2008 session for implementation of OBC reservations, the Government has asked the institutes to keep the admission process on hold until further notice.

"The offer of admissions to the ensuing academic session in Central Educational Institutions shall, until further communication, be limited to the approved intake that existed during the academic session 2006-07,'' said a letter sent out by the Government to the colleges, including the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

"The decision on the new seats will be taken after May 8," said Mr Arjun Singh, Union Minister for Human Resources Development, at a conference here.

Following the communication by the Government, all the IIMs declared the results for the 2007-2009 session. When asked if the delay so far in the admissions would affect the schedule negatively, the Director of IIM-Lucknow, Dr Devi Singh, said, "We will make up for the lost time".

IIM-Ahmedabad too "is on track to start the classes for the two-year post graduate programme from June 21", said a senior official of the institute.
