Trade between India and Pakistan is expected to cross $1.5 billion in 2006-07.
Exports to Pakistan in April-December 2006 stood at $980.33 million, while imports amounted to $247.48 million.
A business delegation led by Mr Muhammad Nasir Khan, President of the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry, called on Mr Kamal Nath, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, on Friday evening and expressed the hope that economic ties between the two countries would strengthen in the near future to benefit both countries.
Mr Nath said that many benefits could accrue to both India and Pakistan if trade relations improve, as it would make both countries more competitive in an increasingly globalised economy.
He hoped that Pakistan would grant `most favoured nation' status to India, and added that the segment of trade between the two nations that currently takes place through other countries would then be replaced by direct trade.
Mr Nath said that the Government was committed to strengthening economic ties with its neighbour and that this issue would be taken care of in due course.
