PM stresses need for skilled labour force

New Delhi April 27 The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, on Friday presented the Shram Awards 2004 to 45 workers at the inaugural session of the 41st Indian Labour Conference.

The awards were in recognition of their performances, innovative abilities, outstanding contribution in the field of productivity and exhibition of exceptional courage and presence of mind. These workers are employed in the departmental undertakings and public sector undertakings of the Central and State governments and private sector units employing 500 workers or more.

The Prime Minister stressed on the need to increase the skilled labour force from about five per cent at present to around 50 per cent, which is the norm in developed countries.

He said the Government would work with trade unions and industry to strengthen labour laws and to ensure that the twin objectives of employment generation and labour welfare are met.
