Conserve energy

With no immediate solution to the power crisis (Business Line, April 29), the Centre's proposal to have different time zones for the country with the aim of staggering energy consumption may only ease the position to a limited extent. It is not a real solution. Despite all the talk of eliminating transmission losses, little action is being taken on this front.

In this context, the New Delhi Municipal Council has shown a way. The Council is using energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs to save power, saving 40 KW every day. It is time the Government made such use mandatory for all government and PSU institutions. And it should initiate an awareness campaign among the public, perhaps offering a concession scheme for the period of the changeover, which can be introduced through the Electricity Boards.
