River pollution: PCB notice to panchayat

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram April 30 The Kerala State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has directed the President and Secretary of Kanjirappally Grama Panchayat in Kottayam district to take necessary steps to stop further pollution of River Chittar flowing through the town.

In a letter addressed to the duo, the Chairman of KSPCB expressed concern that persistent non-compliance with the relevant laws has caused the virtual death of a free-flowing river.

The Chairman, Mr G. Rajmohan, had inspected the river "in the context of persistent complaints from the public about pollution of the river''. It was observed that the situation there was pathetic.

Solid as well as liquid wastes from hotels, markets, chicken stalls, fish vending centres, commercial establishments and public comfort stations were disposed of directly and indirectly into the river stretch. Solid waste dumped wantonly in the premises of the town hall had caused the leachate to flow into the river.
