Members seek Govt intervention to resolve industrial issues

Kolkata April 30 Some trade union members of Hindustan Motors (HM) will go on an indefinite hunger strike at the Uttarpara factory from Tuesday to press for the intervention of the West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, to resolve the ongoing industrial relations problems.

"We feel that in order to resolve the issues, intervention from the Government is necessary. We will go for an indefinite hunger strike at the Uttarpara factory from tomorrow demanding the intervention of Chief Minister," Mr Amitava Bhattacharyya, President, Sangrami Shramik Karmachari Union (SSKU), one of the five registered trade unions of HM, told Business Line.

According to him, the hunger strike protest will be led by SSKU while the Indian National Trade Union Congress will participate by way of `relay hunger strike', he said.

Revised charter

SSKU submitted a revised charter of demands to the Government on Monday. According to Mr Bhattacharyya, in its revised proposal the union has stated that it is willing to discuss issues relating to payment of DA with the management and has also asked the State Labour Minister, Mr Mrinal Banerjee, to make a proposal regarding grant of permanent appointment to the 242 casual employees. The revised charter also says that the workers, against whom chargesheets entailing suspension have been issued, will reply to it.

According to Mr Bhattacharyya, the management and the Government are yet to respond to their revised proposal.

When contacted, Ms Soni Shrivastav, General Manager, Corporate Communication, CK Birla Group, said that the management was yet to receive a copy of the revised charter of demands.
