Excise and Customs Logistics - Shipping States - Tamil Nadu Chennai Customs' revenue mop-up rises 35% Our Bureau
Chennai April 30 Chennai Customs saw a 35 per cent jump in revenue collection last year in line with the record handling of cargo at the Chennai port. The record Rs 12,815-crore collection in 2006-07 is a reflection of the buoyancy in trade, observed Mr A.K. Srivastava, Chief Commissioner of Customs, Chennai, at a seminar on `facilitation in logistics' organised by the Chennai Custom House Agents Association. Chennai port handled 53 million tonnes of cargo last year. The container terminal saw 8.85 lakh TEUs (twenty foot equivalent units) arrive and leave the port a fifth more than the previous year. Another notable feature of the year's operations was the high degree of use of electronic clearance system, both at the Chennai airport and the seaport. While 95 per cent and 98 per cent of the documents were processed electronically at the airport and seaport respectively, import documents were almost entirely handled electronically at both places, Mr Srivastava said. Mr Srivastava said so far 215 electronic auctions (e-auction) were conducted at the Chennai Customs through which goods valued at Rs 47 crore were put under the hammer resulting in revenue realisation of Rs 26 crore. Diamonds, however, fetched more than their assigned values diamonds valued at Rs 1.97 crore were sold for Rs 2.70 crore through e-auctions.
