CLUB HOUSE: Mr A. Krishnamurthy, Director, Alphabetics Inc, addressing students of the DKM College for Women, Vellore.

Vellore April 30 Communication skills have become a vital tool for professionals today. In fact, the ability to communicate well can decide the very survival of companies.

In the communication process, one should be quick to respond to any correspondence received, said Mr S. Krishnamurthy, Director, Alphabetics Inc.

He was addressing students of the DKM College for Women, Vellore, at a meeting held under the aegis of the BL Club lecture series.

Further, with globalisation trends fast catching up, organisations were looking for employees with a global perspective. Today, employees functioned as part of a global team with colleagues drawn from different countries, he said.

"How to communicate with people from different cultural backgrounds is at the core of cross-cultural communication and you need to be adept at it," he said.

Communication, he said, strove to create meaning and sense in any interaction. Feedback was important in the communication process, as otherwise the cycle of communication would be incomplete. "How does one know that the message that one wants to communicate has reached the person it was intended to reach?" he asked.

Distortions in communication created hurdles in the way of solving problems. When the message was distorted, then decisions based on the facts of the message were also flawed and created problems in the decision-making process and eventually the decision itself.
