`Food processing the key to industrial growth'

Our Bureau

New Delhi April 30 The country's efforts to have a sustained industrial growth of 10 per cent, among other things, hinge on steady growth of the food processing industry, according to Dr Ajay Dua, Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion.

Dr Dua was interacting with members of the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry on the subject of sustaining 10 per cent plus industrial growth rate.

Elaborating on the enormous growth potential of the industry, he said that marketing of processed food products was confined to only 200 cities, whereas it had potential of being marketed in over 8,000 cities and towns.

The retail revolution that is taking place in the country will hopefully catalyse the sector, he added.

According to Dr Dua, sustaining 10 per cent plus industrial growth would be a very challenging task.

Dr Dua called for a proactive skill development policy to build on and consolidate the country's demographic advantage.
