Letters Vocational training
The 199th article in the Vision 2020 series made interesting reading. The author rightly points out that transformation of education is the need of the hour and not just expansion of various kinds. Offering opportunities to all skilled students, not the politically privileged alone, makes real talents surface and, as the bulk of such a pool often originates from rural backgrounds, all sections are assured of their entry into the competitive arena. As we witness more and more applications of a wide range of skills, and observe what China's vocational schools are teaching, the developing of application-oriented training modules will be most fruitful for the economy and can play a vital role in generating employment opportunities and employing millions. Many such technologies are now being imported but if developed in the domestic context, they will make our industry more competitive as machinery and input costs will be much lower. In China, as the turnout from vocational schools is growing by the year and becoming more varied, an increasing number of middle-school graduates, especially from lower-income families, are opting for vocational instead of senior school. Last year, the number of vocational school students reached a new high of 5.5 million in China. It is estimated that by 2007 the annual enrolment is expected to be the same as in senior middle schools, which was 8.5 million last year, as per their estimate of China's Vocational and Adult Education Department.
