New Delhi May 1 It was a mixed month for most of the car manufactures as the overall rise in sales varied from 7 per cent to 22 per cent for April. Maruti Udyog Ltd (MUL), the country's largest car manufacturer reported a 17-per cent increase in domestic car sales for April. While General Motors India announced a growth of 22.2 per cent, Honda Siel Cars India (HSCI) reported a 7.5-per cent jump in its sales. MUL during April sold 48,652 vehicles in the domestic market compared to 41,574 vehicles sold in the same period last year. Overall the company sold 50,352 vehicles in the domestic and international markets as against 43,127 in the same period last year. A release from the company on Tuesday said, in the domestic A2 segment, which includes models like Zen, Swift, Alto, sales grew by 20.3 per cent and in the C segment (Omni, Versa) sales increased 21.1 per cent compared to the same period in 2006. Meanwhile, in the A1 segment (M800) MUL posted a fall of 9.8 per cent growth and the A3 segment (Baleno, Esteem) sales recorded a fall of 12.7 per cent, it added.
Honda City
HSCI, in a press release, said the company sold 4,891 units as against 4,551 units in the corresponding month last year. The company sold 2,916 units of mid-size sedan Honda City, 1,481 units of Honda Civic, 255 units of luxury sedan Honda Accord and 239 units of SUV Honda CR-V. For the first four months of the current calendar year, the company reported a 31.3 per cent increase in sales at 22,912 units compared to 17,444 units in the same period last year, it said. General Motors India in sold 4,474 units in April against 3,662 units sold in April last year. The sales comprise 1,670 units of Chevrolet Tavera, 1,306 units of Chevrolet Aveo, 317 units of Chevrolet Optra and 1,181 units of Chevrolet Spark.

In the two-wheeler segment Hero Honda Motors Ltd registered a 4.86 per cent increase in its April 2007 sales. The company sold 2,62,544 units during the month as against 2,50,366 units sold in the corresponding period of 2006. On the other hand, Bajaj Auto Ltd (BAL) continued its downward spiral in motorcycle sales for the third consecutive month, with its April numbers, including exports, declining by 13 per cent compared to the same month last year. The two-wheeler sales registered a dip at 1,65,692 units as against 1,90,964 units last year. And BAL's April bike sales stood at 1,64,304 units as against 1,88,518 units (inclusive of exports) in the same month last year, down 13 per cent. Three-wheeler sales, however, were up by 15 per cent at 24,360 units as against 21,159 units in the corresponding month last year. The exports during the month, however, jumped 64 per cent.
