VOICING A VIEW: Dr K. Prasanna Sai, Head-Business Planning & IT, TVS Electronics, during a BL Club meeting at the Sathyabama University.
Chennai May 2 The rapid pace of technological change has ensured that any development occurring today is likely to become obsolete within five years. According to Dr K. Prasanna Sai, Head-Business Planning & IT, TVS Electronics Ltd, every employee should be focussed on his or her job, or risk burning out even while they stagnated in their current position. "After five years, what you learn today will become obsolete. Obsolescence is not limited to IT alone, but is everywhere," he said. Dr Sai was addressing MBA students of Sathyabama University as part of a lecture series organised by the BL Club. He urged the students to plan their careers with care. "A career is like a glass. Once you drop it, it is gone. There is no second career," he said. Organisations, he said, sought employees who were both able and willing to perform. "In order to succeed, you should have both these attributes. Also, it is important to match your personality to the job you perform," he said. "Avoid industries and jobs that are not in character with your own personality," he said. Further, he exhorted students to develop confidence, as those who were lacking in this respect may not rise to become leaders, he said. He urged the students to face up to the challenges posed by their careers. "Every employee will face tremendous challenges in their careers. It is for you to find ways to meet these challenges and overcome them successfully. Challenging situations also gives employees the opportunity to exhibit their skills," he said. He added that employers in general would prefer to nurture talent within their organisations. "The cost of going external is expensive _ 20 to 40 per cent over and above the recruits current CTC (cost-to-company). Therefore, we prefer internal choice, as it enhances the career options for the existing employees. If the required talent is not available internally, only then do we look for candidates from outside," he said.
