Retailing NSHM Knowledge Campus, RAI plan retail management course Our Bureau
Estimates say nearly 2 million people will be required in the retail sector in the next two years.
Kolkata May 2 NSHM Knowledge Campus has tied up with the Retailers Association of India (RAI) to offer post-graduate programmes in retail management to cater to the needs of the retail sector. The course fee for the 18-month course, which will commence from July this year at NSHM's Kolkata campus, has been fixed at Rs 1.75 lakh. "The manpower requirement in Indian retail sector is pretty huge, second only to the IT/ITES industry. It is estimated that nearly two million people will be required for the retail industry in the next two years. As a result, there is a need to foster retail education in the country," said Mr Gibson G. Vedamani, Chief Executive Officer, RAI. According to Mr Vedamani, nearly 20 per cent of the current 1.8 million people employed in the retail sector are required for back-end operations. Besides NHSM Knowledge Campus, RAI has partnered with eight other institutes across India, offering retail management courses. RAI will provide support for internship and placement facilitation in these institutes. According to Mr Vedamani, the current salary package offered in the organised retail sector on an average is estimated to be Rs 4.5 lakh per annum. In Maharashtra, RAI, in association with the State Government, has initiated training programmes at "subsidised rates" for unemployed youths. "We have plans to start a similar course in West Bengal. We have discussed the proposal recently with the West Bengal Government and have sent a letter to the State education department in this regard," Mr Vedamani said.
