CM promises full support to IT sector

SATYAM CITY CENTRE, the first major BPO in Visakhapatnam, was inaugurated by the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Thursday. - C.V.Subrahmanyam

Visakhapatnam May 3 The Chief Minister, Dr Rajasekhara Reddy, has promised full support to the IT sector in the State and urged IT majors such as Satyam Computers to branch out to more tyre-II cities in the State.

Inaugurating the Satyam City Centre, the BPO complex of Satyam Computers, in the city this evening, Dr Reddy expressed the hope that the special economic zone on the Vizag-Bheemli Road, being developed by Satyam Computers, would be operational soon.

`A MILESTONE'

The entry of Satyam Computers is a major milestone in the growth of Visakhapatnam as an IT centre and it will encourage other companies to set up shop here, Mr B. Ramalinga Raju, Chairman, said.

At a press meet held here before the inauguration of the city centre of the company by the Chief Minister at Resapuvanipalem, Mr Raju said the 6.5-acre site on the highway had been handed over to the company two years ago and "we have so far invested Rs 55 crore on developing the facilities here."

He said the company had also been granted 50 acres on the Vizag-Bheemli Road to set up a special economic zone. "We will build up a million square feet in the next few years in the SEZ," he said, without specifying the proposed investment.

JOB PROSPECTS

He said the Vizag centre, the second by the company in the State, would employ 750 people in the first phase and 1,300 more in the next.

Till now, 60 employees have been recruited.

"We will offer a broad range of services to our customers in Europe and Asia from here," he said.

Mr Raju said the focus would be on recruiting the best talent available in the region, retaining it and making the best use of it, to cut costs and offer world-class services.

"Our attrition rate is the lowest in the industry at 13 per cent against the average of 18 per cent or more. We have been recognised as a very good employer," he said.

Answering a question, he said there were no immediate plans to go to Vijayawada, or any other place, in the State in the near future.

"We will explore the options at a later stage," he said.

Mr Srinivas Vadlamani, Chief Financial Officer, said, "There are a dozen engineering colleges in and around the city and we rely on them for recruiting the workforce. The cost of living is reasonable and it is a desirable place to work and live in," he said.

He said the company, which had already invested Rs 55 crore, would invest Rs 80 crore in the next phase.
