Nandigram people victims of political rivalry: HC

Our Legal Correspondent

FOLLOW THE LEADER: Trinamool Congress leader Ms Mamata Bannerjee and her team met the Governor of West Bengal, Mr Gopal Krishna Gandhi, at Raj Bhavan in Kolkata, on Thursday, to discuss the issue of growing violence at Nandigram. — A. Roy Chowdhury

Kolkata May 3 A division bench of Calcutta High Court comprising Mr S.S. Nijjar, Chief Justice, and Justice P.C. Ghose, today observed that the people of Nandigram in West Bengal had become a victim of political rivalry. The Court expressed great anxiety over this issue.

Responding to public interest litigations (PIL) filed by Calcutta High Court Bar Association and eight others, the Court directed the State Government to ensure that there should be no economic blockade at Nandigram. The State Government was further asked to restore the Ferry Service between Haldia and Nandigram and to supply essential commodities to the people of Nandigram.

The Court adjourned the matter for four weeks. The State Government, in the meantime, will file its affidavit.

In terms of the Court's direction on May 2, the Advocate General filed a status report of Nandigram.
