ITC Sonar gets certified emission cut

Our Bureau

Kolkata, May 3

ITC Sonar Bangla, Kolkata, has obtained Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) issued under the guidance of the United Nations Framework on Climate Change Conservation, says an ITC press release.

Certified Emission Reductions is the technical term for the output of Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects and is traded internationally with countries and companies that have not met their greenhouse gases reduction targets.

According to the release, the energy conservation initiatives will enable the hotel to save nearly 19 per cent of its total annual energy bill, which is estimated at Rs 83 lakh per year. The sale of CERs will also provide additional revenue of more than Rs 1.5 crore over the next few years. The approach has made ITC a carbon and water positive corporation and will make the company a "zero solid waste" company in the next two years, adds the release.
