`Setting goals, the first step towards a successful career'

Mr R. Shekar

CHENNAI May 3 "Do you harbour the ambition to reach the top, seek perfection, have faith in yourself, your team and your boss, and are able to stretch yourself tirelessly?"

According to Mr R. Shekar, Principal Consultant, Goldratt India, students who set their sights high were more likely to be in a position to follow their career of choice.

He was addressing students of the Department of Management Studies, MOP Vaishnav College for Women, at a seminar organised under the aegis of the Business Line Club.

"Can you secure attention without opening your mouth? While colleges do not teach you that, it is an important trait that you should develop," said Mr Shekar.

Encouraging students to develop the best communication skills, he said: "Your speech, the words used and body language should evoke listener interest, for the content of your talk. Else, the audience may not be interested in what you have to say."

During an interview, a candidate may not get more than 15 seconds to impress and secure the attention of the interviewer. Therefore, candidates should be to-the-point while answering questions. Further, they were often found to be edgy, overcome by the fear of not doing well. He urged the students to shed their nervousness and collect themselves together as they were bound to get several opportunities.

He advised them to allow themselves an element of fun and enjoyment in everything that they did. This would help them relax and perform better, he said.

Further, he urged them to set themselves a vision for the future. Students without such a vision usually did not hold a positive image for themselves in the future. "Such students believe that their future is in the hands of luck, fate and circumstances," he said.

"Imagine what you want to be in 2008, 2010 and 2012 and act on those goals by setting a vision," he said.
