On transferring spare parts division to Mobis India

Works Committee, which represents the 1,800 confirmed employees of Hyundai Motor, has objected to the sale of Customer Care Parts to Mobis India.

Chennai May 3 Hyundai Motor India management and workers are to explore options for a compensation package on the transfer of Hyundai's spare parts division to Mobis India Ltd.

Hyundai Motor India announced the transfer of the business to the employees on Wednesday and said that the workers in the department would have to move to Mobis India. But the Works Committee, which represents the 1,800 confirmed employees of Hyundai Motor, has objected to the sale of Customer Care Parts, the spare parts division, to Mobis India. Mobis is a part of Hyundai Mobis of Korea, a Hyundai group company, which handles the spare parts sale, exports and module parts manufacture for Hyundai globally.

Conciliation Talks

According to company officials, workers at the Hyundai Motor factory at Irrungattukottai, 35 km from Chennai, have been demonstrating within the factory premises after the company announced the transfer of the business to Mobis.

While officials have called it a strike, the workers said that production has not been affected — they were not on strike — but the demonstration to express their dissatisfaction has been happening in shifts.

Following conciliation talks mediated by the Tamil Nadu Labour Department, today, the Department said in an order that the conciliation effort would continue to enable the management and workers arrive at a compromise.

Demonstration

The workers have sought a spare parts incentive to compensate them for the transfer of the business of Customer Care Parts to an independent company. The officials have also asked the workers to call off the strike and participate in the talks.

Pending such compromise, the Labour Department has said that the transfer of stocks and material from the spare parts division to Mobis should be stopped until the next conciliation meeting.
