The launch of a Mission on Nano Science and Technology with an allocation of Rs 1,000 crore over a five-year period was approved by the Cabinet on Thursday.

The Department of Science and Technology, the nodal agency for implementing the `Nano Mission' programme, hopes to encourage a greater use of Nano sciences and technology in a wide range of products. The Government is to use the funds to encourage research in the area. Nano research is also expected to help in the development of areas of national interest such as providing safe drinking water, material development and drug delivery. Nano Mission will also seek to form partnerships between educational institutes and the industry to further the programme.
