Industry & Economy - Non-conventional Energy
Long-term biofuels policy soon

Our Bureau

New Delhi, May 3

A long-term biofuels policy, which is under consideration with the Government, is expected to be in place in the next six months, said Dr S.K. Chopra, Special Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The policy would focus on the development of the biofuels sector and fiscal and financial incentives. A national bio-diesel mission would also be established to have enterprise-driven bio-diesel production in the country, said Dr Chopra.

While speaking at a conference organised by CII on biofuels on Thursday, he said the issue of energy security was important in relation to the fast growing economy and for sustaining growth. The Indian bio-diesel programme, based on jatropha and other feedstock, is not likely to lead to any conflict in the nature of `Food vs Fuel' debate as seen in other countries, he added.
