Shippers' hopes belied

The bid to revive the shippers' movement in the Indian sub-continent with the support of the Asian Shippers Council appears to have suffered a setback again. The general body meeting of the Association of Shippers Councils of Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka (ASCOBIPS), to be held in Mumbai on May 16 and 17, has been postponed.

Shippers wonder if it will be held at all. The All-India Shippers Council (AISC), in association with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, was planning to organise an international conference on "Regional Cooperation In Maritime Trade" as part of the general body meeting. The idea was that the AISC would take over as the Chairman of ASCOBIPS. Those associated with the shippers' movement in the sub-continent were hoping that the AISC, the apex body of various regional shippers' associations, would be back in action after having remained dormant for nearly 20 years. However, that may not happen.
