Minister says tenders to be floated next week


The Government intends to provide irrigation to 19.43 lakh acres in Telangana along with coastal Andhra (10.17 lakh acres) and Rayalseema (5.76 lakh acres) in the next 3 years.

Hyderabad May 7 The State Government has approved two irrigation projects worth Rs 28,000 crore to be taken up soon. These are the Pranahita-Chevella and Dummugudem tail pond schemes.

While the Pranahita-Chevella project is expected to irrigate 12 lakh acres, with the creation of 160 TMC feet of water potential at a cost of Rs 18, 000 crore, the Dummugudem project would create 165 TMC feet of water and cost about Rs 14,450 crore, according to the State Minister for Irrigation, Mr Ponnala Lakshmaiah.

Tenders for schemes

Tenders will be floated next week for these two schemes, which were given the nod by the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, just before he left for the US, the Minister told newspersons.

Giving a performance record of his irrigation ministry for the last three years, Mr Lakshmaiah said about 12 lakh acres of irrigation potential has been created, spending around Rs 19,009 crore.

Encouraged by the progress, the Government has set greater targets for the next three years to bring in about 35.36 lakh acres more under irrigation through the Jala Yagnam programme.

For the fiscal 2007-08 alone, the Government has budgeted Rs 13,000 crore, which is a substantial increase from Rs 10,000 crore in the previous year, the Minister said.

Positioning itself politically, the Government intends to provide irrigation to 19.43 lakh acres in Telangana along with coastal Andhra (10.17 lakh acres) and Rayalseema (5.76 lakh acres) in the next three years.

Under the modernisation programme, the Government intends to take up the Nagarjunasagar project, for which it has received World Bank approval for the Rs 2,250-crore initiative. Similarly, the Godavari delta modernisation project at a cost of Rs 1627 crore has been prepared. The Krishna delta project costing Rs 1,501 crore has also been okayed, he said.
