The Hindu Business Line : Tax revenue goes up 70% in 3 yrs in AP

Hyderabad May 7 The collections of Commercial Taxes Department of Andhra Pradesh have registered a compounded growth of 70 per cent in the last three years. The annual revenues have gone up to Rs 15,587.25 crore in 2006-07 as against Rs 9,167.74 crore in 2003-04, Mr Konathala Ramakrishna, Minister for Commercial Taxes, said.

Addressing a press conference here to give an overview of the department's performance in the last three years, he said the previous three years (2001-02 to 2003-04) had registered a compounded growth rate of just 27 per cent as the revenues grew from Rs 7,662.26 crore to Rs 9,167.74 crore.

"We could achieve huge growth rates even after reducing tax rates on several items," the Minister said.

He attributed the growth to simplification and rationalisation of tax rates.

The department collected Rs 1,223.74 crore in April this year as against Rs 966.34 crore in the same month last year.

e-returns

The department launched a pilot project in the twin cities allowing e-returns and e-payments, saving time and energy of dealers.

"It is in vogue from January 1. We will review the systems before replicating in other locations of the State," the Minister said.

It also launched Centralised Dealer Service Centre early this year, allowing the dealers to make online requests for statutory forms.

Terming it a major breakthrough in reforms, he said the dealers would have the forms delivered at their addresses. "So far, 923 dealers have availed the service," he said.
