PRIZED CATCH: A fisherman displaying tuna fish he caught near Kavaratti in Lakshadweep. High export potential, both in terms of global interest and value-addition, has made tuna a current favourite. Tuna exports from the country are projected to touch 300 tonnes this year at an average $5 a kg due to conversion of mechanised fishing vessels to long-liners and increasing number of boats. Globally, tuna is the third largest traded marine food item, behind shrimp and cephalopods.
