Pyramid Saimira plans biometric card for film buffs

Our Bureau

Hyderabad May 7 Pyramid Saimira Theatre Ltd is planning to introduce a `blind date' for film buffs — a biometric card that allows them to watch 120 shows a month.

The company, which is testing the card and the relevant systems in some theatres in Tamil Nadu, would come out with a widespread offering in June. "We have targeted to enrol 50 lakh cards in the first year. Our plan is to have one crore members thereafter," Mr P.S. Saminathan, Managing Director, said. Addressing a press conference here on Monday, he said using the Rs 100 card, people could just walk into the chain of theatres managed by the company.

"If they like it, they can stay back, If they don't they can walk off and join the show in a nearby theatre," he said.

The company would go for a soft launch of the system in Andhra Pradesh in June, where it is planning to have 100 single screen theatres and 25 multiplexes in the next two years.

Rs 5,000-crore investments

The company, which has a capacity of two lakh seats a show, is planning to invest Rs 5,000 crore on expanding the theatre network and building multiplexes. By 2010, it proposes to have 2,000 screens across the country.

In Andhra Pradesh, the company plans to improve the seat capacity from 23,000 seats to 2.1 lakhs by March 2008. It has taken 36 cinemas on long-lease in West Godavari and Nizam area (consisting of several Telangana districts). "We will add 73 more in Visakhapatnam, East and West Godavari districts soon," he said.

The company would spend Rs 250 crore on digitisation and improving infrastructure in the theatres acquired.
