WTO Government - Foreign Relations India keen on Doha success, PM tells Bush Our Bureau

New Delhi May 7 The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, has conveyed to the US President, Mr George W. Bush, that India is keen on a successful conclusion of the Doha Round of the World Trade Organisation's (WTO) multilateral trade negotiations.
US call
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office, Dr Singh received a telephone call from the US President on Monday evening. "The Prime Minister said that India has a strong vested interest in the successful functioning of a multilateral trading system, and that India would like the Doha Round to adhere to the original understanding that it will be a development round. (Further), India would like to work with all like-minded countries to make a success of Doha negotiations," the statement added.
Climate change
The two leaders also discussed matters relating to climate change and the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). Dr Singh told the US President that the problems of environment can't be solved by perpetuating poverty in developing countries. Also, they agreed that the emphasis must be on achieving greater energy efficiency and development of new technologies.
