Coal CCL gearing up to double output Our Bureau
Kolkata May 7 As part of its growth plan, the Ranchi-based Central Coalfields Ltd (CCL) is gearing up to double the company's production in the next couple of years and also to increase the capacity of coal washeries. The capacity expansion is planned to meet increased demand of its main consumer in the power sector. Highlighting this, the CCL's Chairman and Managing Director, Mr R.P. Rotolia, said that the company aimed to reach a production target of about 78 million tonnes (mt) by 2011-12 from the existing level of about 44 mt although the Coal Ministry is asking for 84 mt by terminal year of the Eleventh Plan. In a bid to achieve the target, the company has decided to open up new projects with a target that is higher than what they were designed for. Among those are the Magadh project (revised upward to 20 mt), Amrapali (12 mt), North Urimari (3.5 mt), Konar and Karo (3 mt each). Two of the existing large mines, namely Piparwar and Asoka, which were designed for 6.5 mt would be upgraded to 10 mt each. It is pointed out that most of CCL's production came from opencast mines and only 2 mt from underground (UG) mines. CCL is now trying to increase the share underground production. The board of CCL has, thus, approved the introduction of continuous mine in Chiru UG at a cost of about Rs 145 crore to raise this mine's production from 2 mt to 8 mt per annum. Mr Ritolia said that only three subsidiaries of Coal India Ltd (CIL), including CCL, would be growing during the Eleventh Plan, while other subsidiaries were expected to reach a production plateau. The production in Western Coalfields Ltd (WCL), which has already reached a plateau would slow down
