Switch to CFLs

The simplest way to ensure that people switch to compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) is to exempt CFLs from duties such as Customs, excise and VAT. This will reduce prices by at least 30 per cent and make them more affordable.

The lighting load forms 18 per cent of the world demand. In India the figure is likely to be even more as we do not use so much air-conditioning, etc.

A 100 per cent switching of lighting to CFLs will save at least 5-6 per cent of the energy consumption, going by the world lighting load, and perhaps even 10 per cent or more, given Indian conditions.

The revenue lost by the tax-breaks will be more than made up by the reduction in the losses of SEBs, savings to lower- and middle-income households in power bills and the capital saved by obviating the need for many more power plants
