Tea States - West Bengal
Our Bureau
Kolkata May 8 Officials of Tata Tea today met ministers and senior officials of the Government of West Bengal and sought permission to embark upon the cultivation of non-tea produce in vacant land that is available in four company-owned tea gardens in the Dooars region. A presentation in this regard was made the the West Bengal's Minister of Industries, Mr Nirupam Sen, the Minister for Labour, Mr Mrinal Banerjee, the Minister of Land and Land Reforms, Mr Abdur Rezzak Mollah, the State's Chief Secretary, Mr Amit Kiran Deb, and the Industry Secretary, Dr Sabyasachi Sen. Official sources told presspersons at Writers' Buildings that the company had sought the State Government's permission to put available vacant land to productive use by cultivating non-tea produce. This, they said, would also create incremental job opportunities. The setting up of an agro processing unit - where the workers could well be stakeholders - was also being contemplated, sources said.
