Meet stresses on promotion of technically skilled labour

Our Bureau

Mangalore May 8 With Dakshina Kannada district all set to receive various industries in manufacturing and service sectors, there is a need to focus on promoting technically skilled labour that could meet the requirements of the industry. This factor came in for discussion at an interactive session on `Promotion of technical skills in Dakshina Kannada district', organised by the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) here on Tuesday.

Capt J.P. Menezes, KCCI President, who highlighted the condition of technical training institutes in the district, suggested that a nodal agency or nodal officer be set up to market and coordinate between the technical training institutes and industry. Standards and syllabi of technical training should be revised as per the market needs, he said.

New courses

He also suggested that new courses with strong industry linkages should be introduced in service and manufacturing sectors after the market study. New courses could be thought of in tourism, hospitality and healthcare in service sector, and in shipbuilding, construction and food processing in manufacturing sector.

Capt Menezes said the earnest desire of KCCI was to make Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts as `centres of excellence' in the country to provide skilled workforce to the industry.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr S.G. Hegde, Joint Director of District Industries Centre, said that there was a need for the creation of a databank of skilled manpower in the region. The Mangalore SEZ will require a huge number of skilled manpower. In such a situation, the databank would help in catering the needs of the industry.

Mr M. Maheshwar Rao, Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district, said that human skill was a necessary infrastructure for the growth of the country, and personnel with skills were in short supply today. Endorsing the views of Capt Menezes, he said new skills could be the part of curriculum in technical training institutes.

Principals of various industrial training institutes participated in the meeting.
