Economy States - Andhra Pradesh Livestock, construction, trade and real estate rev up GSDP K.V. Kurmanath
Hyderabad May 9 Bad news to Andhra Pradesh's economy is that the share of agriculture to Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) has marginally declined. But, the good news is that trade, hotels, construction, real estate, livestock and fisheries have registered promising growth rates. At constant prices, net value added from agriculture for 2006-07 was estimated to be at Rs 26,033 crore as against Rs 27,860 crore in the previous year. Net value added, which is considered to be the right indicator of the real growth in a State's economy, is obtained by subtracting consumption of capital used in generating the gross value added in the year. "This is largely due to fall in production of foodgrains from 169.50 lakh tonnes to 160 lakh tonnes during the period," Dr Saroja Rama Rao, Director of Economics and Statistics, told Business Line. Though there was a decline from agriculture sector, allied sectors such as animal husbandry, fisheries and dairy had recorded good growth rates. But the growth in net value added in livestock sector was quite encouraging. It went up to Rs 13,967 crore in 2006-07 from Rs 13,344 crore. Important livestock items such as milk, meat and eggs showed significant growth rates. There was an increase in contribution from fisheries too. While marine fishing saw an output of Rs 699 crore (Rs 610 crore), contribution from prawn/shrimp went up to Rs 4,978 crore from Rs 4,265 crore. Inland fishing, however, showed a marginal decline. One of the biggest contributors in terms of net value added is trade, hotels and restaurants. At constant prices, this sector added Rs 26,935 crore (Rs 24,778 crore). Interestingly, unorganised sector contributing Rs 19,807 crore (Rs 18,838 crore) generated more output than the organised private sector at Rs 7,313 crore (Rs 6,196 crore). This sunrise construction sector added net value of Rs 13,296 crore in 2006-07 as against Rs 11,656 crore last year. The gross value added from household sector was Rs 2,638 crore (Rs 2,407 crore).
