New Delhi May 9 The board of approval for SEZs today deferred a decision on giving formal clearance to the Reliance-promoted Navi Mumbai SEZ Pvt Ltd for a multi-product SEZ spread over 1,250 hectares in Maharashtra, while granting formal approvals to 16 proposals out of 23 cases it considered.
TIDCO proposals
Notable among them were proposals for a multi-product SEZ from Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) in Ennore over 1,214 hectares and a similar one in Nanguneri over 1,020 hectares. The board, headed by the Commerce Secretary, Mr Gopal K. Pillai, also formalised two proposals from New Chennai Township Private Ltd for the engineering sector over 126.26 hectares and for a multi-services zone over 121.41 hectares in Cheyyur taluk in Tamil Nadu.
Clarifications
Mr Pillai told Business Line that some board members sought a few clarifications on the Navi Mumbai SEZ proposal. Once they get the response from the developer, the board will consider it. Two other proposals from Tamil Nadu that got formal clearance were from Velankanni Information Systems Pvt Ltd for an IT/ITeS zone and J. Matadee Eco Parks in Kanchipuram. Suzlon Infrastructure got the nod for an SEZ for port-based hi-tech engineering products and related services near Mangalore port and a similar one in Vadodara. Two other Gujarat-based SEZ proposals that got clearance were NC Realty Pvt Ltd for industrial machinery and ancillaries and Jayant Oil and Derivatives Ltd in Bharuch for chemicals.
From West Bengal, three plans were cleared - Unitech's proposal for IT/ITeS zone and proposals from Enfield Infrastructure and Enfield Realtors for IT/ITeS and biotechnology SEZs respectively.
Officials said that apart from grant of formal approval to 16 cases, the board approved other miscellaneous pleas pertaining to notified SEZs on authorised activities such as construction of compound walls and other works they could undertake.
With today's grant, the total number of formal approvals has gone up to 250, spread across 17 States and two Union Territories.
Out of these 250 approvals, notifications have been issued to 101.
