Steel Be more energy efficient, Govt tells sponge iron makers Our Bureau
New Delhi May 10 The Government on Thursday urged the sponge iron industry to become more energy efficient in order to provide raw material to the secondary steel sector at competitive rates by improving their production quality. Majority of the long steel manufacturers in the secondary steel sector and re-rollers use sponge iron as their raw material. Speaking at the annual general meeting of the Sponge Iron Manufacturers Association (SIMA) here on Thursday, the Steel Secretary, Mr R.S. Pandey, said that the sponge iron industry has to be competitive and ensure optimum utilisation of their capacities. "We are concerned about their competitiveness as they would have to compete with the primary steel producers," he said. He also assured the sponge iron producers that the Ministry of Steel would take necessary steps to ensure the availability of P and C grades of coal, which is the second most important raw material after iron ore, for coal based sponge iron plants. He also pointed out that the issue has already been taken up with the Ministry of Coal. Speaking on the occasion, the SIMA President, Mr P.R. Dhariwal, urged the Government to regulate iron exports in view of the growing needs of the domestic steel industry.
