Outlook Industry & Economy - Climate & Weather News Corp aims at becoming carbon neutral Our Bureau
New Delhi May 11 Rupert Murdoch-owned News Corporation is turning green, and hopes to take along its 47,000 employees and millions of readers, viewers and Web users around the world on climate change. "If we are to connect with our audiences on this issue, we must first get our own house in order," believes Mr Rupert Murdoch, Chairman and CEO, News Corp, which owns the popular television channels of the Star Network. According to a company release, News Corp has set itself a deadline of becoming carbon neutral by 2010. The company is to significantly reduce carbon emissions from its operations by adopting energy efficiency, renewable power and offsetting otherwise unavoidable emissions, and will work with the Climate Group, a non-profit organisation working in the area, to reach its goal. For its large audience, it has dedicated a channel on climate change on MySpace.com, offered incentives for its employers at Fox in the US to buy or lease hybrid cars which the company, and measured the carbon footprint of a single copy of The Times of London newspaper. News International and HarperCollins, UK have both entered into agreements to purchase renewable energy and will be carbon neutral by the end of this year. "The climate problem will not be solved without mass participation by the general public everywhere," says Mr Murdoch.
